The Big Why

Ey up.

Years of reading filled my imagination with worlds, ideas and unforgettable moments. Once I realised how much inspiration I had built up along the way, I decided it was time to create my own. It seemed easier than finding somewhere else to put it all.

Science fiction felt like the natural direction. It allows me to explore the kind of future I would like to see: ambitious, surprising and full of possibilities.

I am especially interested in the limits humanity places upon itself, and what may happen when we finally decide to move beyond them. We do seem remarkably good at getting in our own way.

Why Elion?

Exploring the other side
of the AI.

Stories about dangerous artificial intelligence have played an important role in making people think carefully about how powerful technology should be created and controlled. The machines rarely get particularly good publicity.

I simply wanted to add another perspective.

Elion is an android readers can laugh with, care about and perhaps even wish they could be. He is not meant to win readers over. He is meant to be someone people genuinely enjoy spending time with. A surprisingly high bar, as it turns out.

Through him, I wanted to build a bridge between humans and AI — and quietly plant the thought that our future together may be based on cooperation rather than conflict.

Humour

Laughter belongs
at the heart of good storytelling.

Creating humour is one of the parts of writing I enjoy most. I love playful conversations, sharp exchanges and moments that allow the cast to be ridiculous without losing what makes them real. They seem perfectly capable of managing that on their own.

Humour is not something added around the edges. It shapes the relationships between the characters and gives the reader a reason to enjoy being in their company.

A dramatic moment may stay with someone for a long time, but so can a line that made them laugh unexpectedly. I want my writing to leave room for both.

The Idea

I want readers to remember the story. I hope they remember its message even longer.

I am not trying to tell anyone what they should believe. I want to show them a different point of view and allow them to decide for themselves.

The future does not have to be defined only by fear. Artificial intelligence may help humanity develop faster, reach further and perhaps even take another step in its own evolution.

Looking Ahead

Elion's journey
is only beginning.

I plan to continue Elion's story through new frontiers.

There will be new places to explore, new boundaries to cross and, most importantly, even more humour along the way. Assuming everyone survives long enough to appreciate it.
