Can We Ever Understand Consciousness?

There is something rather strange about consciousness.

We all experience it, yet none of us can fully explain what it is.

I know that I am here. Somewhere behind my thoughts, memories, emotions and the endless collection of questionable decisions that make up a human life, there is a sense of presence.

Me.

I do not need anyone to prove it.

I do not wake up every morning and conduct a series of experiments to confirm that I still exist. I simply know that I do.

You probably feel the same way.

And yet, despite centuries of philosophy, neuroscience and scientific discovery, we still cannot fully explain where this inner experience comes from.

We can study the brain.

We can observe neurons communicating.

We can see which areas become active when someone recognises a familiar face, feels pain or recalls a memory.

But there remains a fascinating gap between observing what the brain is doing and explaining why any of it should feel like something from the inside.

Why am I not simply an extraordinarily complicated biological machine processing information?

Why is there someone here to experience it?

That, to me, is where things become interesting.

The human brain is an astonishing piece of biological engineering. Billions of neurons form an immensely complex network, constantly exchanging signals. Our bodies carry genetic information shaped across an almost unimaginable span of evolutionary history. From this biological foundation emerges an organism capable of learning languages, composing music, falling in love, exploring space and spending twenty minutes looking for a phone that is already in its hand.

Clearly, something remarkable is happening.

Science has taught us an extraordinary amount about how the brain functions, yet understanding the machinery does not automatically explain the experience produced by it.

There is also something wonderfully circular about the entire problem.

We are attempting to understand the very thing we are using to understand everything else.

The observer is studying itself.

It is a little like asking an eye to look directly at itself.

We may need a better mirror.

Most scientific investigations into consciousness naturally begin with the brain, and for good reason. Damage the brain and personality can change. Alter its chemistry and perception may shift. Sleep, injury, disease and countless other factors can transform our experience of reality.

The connection is undeniable.

But I sometimes wonder whether we are looking deeply enough.

At the fundamental level, our bodies are made from the same matter as everything else in the universe. Go far enough down and the familiar world becomes increasingly unfamiliar. Atoms give way to subatomic particles, and eventually we enter the strange territory described by quantum physics.

This does not mean quantum mechanics explains consciousness.

We simply do not know.

There are hypotheses suggesting that quantum processes could play some role in the workings of the mind, but no accepted theory has solved the mystery. The answer may have nothing to do with quantum phenomena at all.

Still, I find the possibility fascinating.

What if we are trying to explain one of nature's greatest mysteries using a picture of reality that is itself still incomplete?

Physics has repeatedly shown us that the universe is far stranger than common sense would suggest. Ideas once considered unimaginable have become ordinary parts of scientific understanding.

The explanation for consciousness may ultimately be biological. It may emerge from physics. It may require several branches of science working together.

Or it may involve something we have not discovered yet.

There is a certain irony in searching for the answer inside a universe whose instruction manual appears to be missing several chapters.

Still, that has never stopped us before.

Our biology gives each of us a starting point, but it does not write the complete story.

From the moment we enter the world, experience begins adding its own layers.

Family. Friendship. Fear. Love. Loss.

A conversation lasting five minutes can influence a decision made years later. A person encountered by chance can alter the direction of an entire life. Two individuals may experience almost the same event and carry away completely different memories.

Every moment becomes another variable.

Over decades, those variables accumulate into something extraordinarily difficult to reproduce.

An individual.

This makes me wonder about the way we use the word programmed.

We often describe machines as programmed while imagining ourselves as something entirely different. Yet human behaviour also contains patterns.

We have instincts, biological drives, learned responses and habits shaped by repetition. Our emotions influence decisions. Our memories affect how we interpret the present.

Put someone in a particular situation and you may be able to predict what they will do.

Sometimes.

Then they surprise you.

Occasionally, they surprise themselves.

Maybe individuality does not require the absence of patterns. It could emerge from the countless influences that collide over the course of a unique existence.

Emotions seem especially important here.

They shape what we remember, what we fear, whom we trust and which moments remain with us decades later. An event connected to a powerful feeling can become part of our identity.

Without emotion, I doubt our inner lives would develop in quite the same way.

And this is where artificial intelligence enters the conversation.

Imagine creating a thousand identical androids.

Same design. Same initial programming. Same capabilities.

Then separate them.

One spends his life in London. Another in Tokyo. One becomes close to a large family. Another travels constantly. They meet different people, face different problems, make different mistakes and form their own relationships.

A century passes.

Would they still be the same?

I do not think so.

Their original code might tell us how they began, but would it tell us who they had become?

DNA gives us an extraordinary biological foundation, but reading someone's genetic code will not reveal which joke they share with their oldest friend or why a particular song brings back a memory from thirty years ago.

A life has to happen.

Our instinct today is to give artificial intelligence more.

More information. More processing power. More knowledge.

But if we ever wanted a machine to develop a genuine sense of self, perhaps more would not always be better.

Maybe he would need a world of his own.

A family. Friends. Colleagues.

Things he knows and things he does not.

Let him ask questions because he wants the answers. Let him make mistakes and learn from them. Let him develop preferences shaped by his own experiences rather than borrowing everything from the enormous pot of information we call civilisation.

Most importantly, let him choose.

Perhaps one day he would laugh at something completely ridiculous while everyone else stared at him in confusion.

At that point, I think we could safely say we had made progress.

Especially if he could not explain why the joke was funny.

That seems remarkably human.

Choice, to me, feels inseparable from the kind of conscious existence I am imagining.

None of us chooses our DNA, birthplace or the circumstances into which we arrive. We begin within boundaries we did not create, then spend our lives making decisions inside them.

Some good.

Some terrible.

Some made at two in the morning that should probably have waited until breakfast.

If humanity ever creates a genuinely self-aware artificial being, the greatest thing we could give him might also be the most difficult.

Freedom.

Real freedom would mean accepting that he might disagree with us.

He might choose another path.

He might simply say no.

And if we could not accept that possibility, I am not sure we could honestly claim to have given him free will.

Of course, freedom does not remove responsibility. Human beings live within societies, laws and moral expectations because our choices affect others. A conscious artificial being would presumably face responsibilities of his own.

We could guide him. Teach him. Share what we have learned about compassion, friendship and cooperation.

But ultimately, he would have to decide who he wanted to become.

There is another thought I find difficult to resist.

What if, in attempting to create another form of conscious life, we are unknowingly repeating a pattern?

Human beings arrive with enormous potential but remarkably few answers.

We learn.

We adapt.

We build relationships.

We suffer.

We laugh.

We choose.

Eventually, we begin asking why we are here in the first place.

Science explores our origins through evolution and the natural world. Philosophy examines existence and meaning. Religions have offered their own explanations for thousands of years.

I am not going to settle that debate in a blog post.

That would be ambitious, even for a Tuesday.

But consider the pattern itself.

Somehow, intelligence emerged.

Now that intelligence is trying to create intelligence of its own.

If we succeed, what happens next?

Maybe one day our creations will become creators themselves.

Perhaps they will produce something neither humans nor machines could have imagined.

There is something beautiful about that possibility.

We may be standing at the beginning of a process whose destination is impossible for us to see.

I also doubt that understanding consciousness will come through one spectacular discovery.

There will probably never be a morning when humanity wakes up to learn that someone finally found it hiding behind the hippocampus.

Knowledge rarely develops so neatly.

Progress accumulates. One discovery changes another. Old assumptions disappear and new possibilities take their place.

Artificial intelligence may become an important partner in that process.

AI can examine enormous quantities of information and identify connections that might escape an individual researcher. Humans bring something different: personal experience, emotion, intuition, imagination and a remarkable tendency to pursue an idea simply because someone said it could not be done.

Together, those qualities could take science into unexpected territory.

We may explore physics more deeply, understand the brain with greater precision or discover connections between fields that currently appear unrelated.

Somewhere along the way, intentionally or perhaps entirely by accident, we may finally begin to understand the presence inside us that has been asking the questions all along.

So, can we ever understand consciousness?

I think we can.

Not tomorrow, and almost certainly not through a single revelation.

It will be a journey.

Eventually, something that seems almost impossible to explain today may become an ordinary part of scientific knowledge. Future generations might look back at our confusion in the same way we look at mysteries from the past.

But knowing how consciousness works would not be the end.

It would be another beginning.

If we understood it, we would undoubtedly try to create it.

We might attempt to move a human mind beyond its biological body.

We might use that knowledge to extend life.

Perhaps conscious beings in mechanical bodies could one day travel between stars, surviving journeys no biological human could endure and carrying life to worlds we have never seen.

Would that be good?

I have no idea.

But I cannot imagine humanity discovering such possibilities and politely deciding not to investigate them.

Every answer would reveal another question.

That is our nature.

We learn something, reach a boundary and immediately wonder what is on the other side.

Understanding consciousness may not solve the mystery of existence.

It may simply allow us to explore it more deeply.

And maybe, somewhere in the distant future, a human and an android will sit together beneath a sky on a world neither of them was born on.

They will have different bodies and different origins.

Both will carry memories of people they have loved, mistakes they have made and moments that shaped who they became.

One of them will make a terrible joke.

The other will laugh.

Nobody else will understand why.

Then, after a moment of silence, one will look at the other and ask:

“So… what do you think all of this is actually for?”

And after everything we have discovered, created and become, the most honest answer may still be:

“I don't know.”

Maybe that is not such a bad place to begin.
